By the end of the course you will also be able to create “tapes” for casting submissions, online casting, and castings in person.

With expert guidance from our experienced instructor, you’ll delve deep into these scenes, unraveling their essence and uncovering their true potential.

But that’s just the beginning. As the weeks progress, you’ll rehearse and refine your chosen scene, preparing it for a captivating presentation in class. And get ready for the thrilling finale—a ‘mock’ on-camera audition in the fourth week. This is your chance to showcase your talent and learn the valuable art of navigating casting rooms with confidence and professionalism.

After each ‘mock’ audition, we’ll come together as a class to watch and discuss each actor’s performance. Through these insightful discussions, we’ll analyze the choices made and explore who would have been cast in the roles and why.

Acting the Monologue

Online Course

Who is this for:

This class is for anyone interested in working deeply on monologues for performance and castings. As the Pandemic forced much of TV/Film casting online, this class will help the students gain confidence on camera and nail both performance and casting.
Also, for students that are interested in auditioning for performing arts schools and acting programs, this class is an ideal place to work on material to prepare for school auditions. It’s the students’ responsibility to find and bring monologues to class.

Mission:

Ultimately, a basic introduction to an actor for an audience is through monologue work. Working with Raymond individually within the class structure and also seeing other actors’ work, the students will gain a deeper understanding of the material and their personal connection to it. Through this work, the student will find confidence and creativity in their monologues.

Opportunities:

Beyond castings and school auditions, students could come together and perform their monologues in a ‘monologue jam,’ hosted at the end of the term at CCB. To truly understand the material we often need to have our work before an audience that is more welcoming than castings and auditions can be.

Acting for the Camera

Who this is for:

This class is for serious actors who are looking to expand their knowledge of on-camera work as well as for acting students that want to understand how acting for the camera is the same and different from acting on stage.

Mission:

Knowing how to audition for film and TV is only one part of the process. Knowing how the camera works and how shots are set up and what is required of the actor on set is paramount to creating a career in Film/TV. This class will delve deep into on-camera work so that actors can book the job and succeed on set.

Opportunities:

Working with Raymond who has been on set with many Hollywood greats, students will get an in depth view of how to work in Film and TV. They will also see themselves and each other on a cinema camera, and be able to critique themselves and others to garner the best performance possible.

Musical Theatre Workshop

This class will culminate with an end of the year cabaret performance choosing the best songs from the work in class.

Who is this class for?

This is an ongoing monthly class for professional actors in the musical theatre industry in Costa Rica as well as serious students who want to develop their abilities in a professional level class. This is the perfect class for students looking to audition for opportunities abroad.

Mission

The purpose of this class is to deepen the understanding of the connection between the music and the lyrics of the song to the artist. Through this exploration we find deeper meaning within ourselves that we can then express to emotionally move the audience.

Acting: The Meisner Technique

For the serious actor and acting students looking for a professional level course. This is a two-year program of the Meisner technique, taught on an ongoing basis in two month increments.

Background:

The Meisner Technique was created by Sanford Meisner in New York City in the 1930’s. It is a technique that is typically a 2-year program and teaches actors to «Live truthfully under imaginary circumstances». The course is divided into three different levels. All adult students are welcome.

Beginning, Level One:

(6 months) The actor sheds old habits and acquires new ones through a series of exercises designed to connect the performers to a greater understanding of themselves. The actor procures the art of listening which is the most important thing in acting. At the end of this level the actor advances with a «BLACKOUT» scene.

Intermediate, Level Two

(6 months) The actor takes all the tools acquired from the beginning level and incorporates them into a scene. This level consists of deep scene study. The actor learns what a «FIRST READING» is; the art of paraphrasing when doing a first reading and how it brings the actor to a better understanding of the character and experience of the moment. The actor will also gain the knowledge and experience of the emotional life of a character through «EMOTIONAL PREP». Emotional prep will help the actor establish a foundation from which their emotional life can be accessed when called upon during a performance. The actor will also gain the knowledge and experience of blocking when doing a scene.

Advanced Level Three:

(6 months) The advanced level deals with intense character study. Actors will be required to dive deep into their psyche and confront emotionally difficult character pieces. This overall course is for the advanced actor who has shown the willingness to go above and beyond for the character they embody. The actors will perform and demonstrate scene after scene, understanding of the text in the script, knowledge of movement and motivation for their actions.
